The National Indigenous Peoples Day resource is a collection of fun and educational activities for students. Through a variety of fun facts, stories, quizzes, games, colouring pages, and crafts, students learn more about the unique heritage, diverse cultures and valuable contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Across Canada, National Indigenous Peoples Day is marked by ceremonies and celebrations that highlight cultural performances and activities, displays of arts and crafts, and events that recognize the contributions of Indigenous people.

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The resource is an excellent teaching tool for to initiate a broader examination of the many historical and contemporary contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people to Canada and the world. An excellent resource to accompany National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated on June 21st. Through the activities and projects, students learn about the unique heritage, diverse cultures and valuable contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The booklet could be used as a prelude to discussions of the importance of culture and traditions in different groups and, at the same time educating younger students of the many historical contributions of Indigenous people to Canada. The resource examines topics of culture, medicine from nature, transportation, cooking and crafts in an age-appropriate manner. Teachers are encouraged to consult local Elders, cultural education centres or friendship centres for more information.
